This is something I had to blog about: National Ice Cream Month.
The year was 1984.
Headlines for that year were about Indira Ghandi’s assassination, the famine in Ethiopia, US Bank failures, recession, Nicaragua, AIDS…stonewash jeans were the rave, Bananarama’s song, Cruel Summer, was one of the hits of the day, and Band Aid formed.
President Ronald Reagan was at the helm. Despite the negatives from around the world, he made an executive decision that was for the lighter, more enjoyable side of life.
July would become National Ice Cream month, with the third Sunday of the month being National Ice Cream Day.
And guess what today is?
Yup, you guessed it.
Today is the third Sunday of July and now is the time to indulge in the cold treat. Different regions celebrate this day with various ice cream varieties and activities. Depending on the region, like Philadelphia, this week in particular is full of celebrations.
Check out how your region is celebrating this day, week or month:
Philadelphia: The Reading Terminal Market
New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont, Ohio, Virginia and Iowa
Carvel, Marble Slab Creamery and Maggie Moo’s and Graeter’s
If you can’t find what you’re looking for, surf the web for your region or call your local area ice cream stores.
