When I’ve gathered information for a particular story I’m working on, I process that information by incorporating another love of mine: cycling.
Cycling refocuses my thoughts. It allows my brain to relax while toning and strengthening both my body and mind. This two-part process helps to organize the information I’ve gathered. My brain puts the pieces together for the story and by the time I return from my travels, I have another part of my story planned.
Simply put: cycling is one of the ways in which I digest what I’ve learned.
What I find so intriguing is that cycling is part relaxation, part stamina. That combination offers an internal peace, which makes my spirit soar. It makes me happier about myself, gives a sense of accomplishment and provides calm.
When I challenge myself to cycle hills, I find that I can meet challenges and exceed my goals.
It’s empowering.
One of the biggest cycling challenges I’ve accomplished was cycling the Erie Canal. This eight day ride from Buffalo, New York to Albany, New York is over 400 miles long through New York State.
When I’m faced with those same struggles with a particular story, it’s like riding up one of the hills I cycle; I know I can meet the struggles and exceed beyond them, nailing the story.
